What's in the name ? The Sunburst yellow paintwork suggests that it was named after the sunny state of "California", Such was the success of this limited edition that in the year 2000 Mazda decided to release a second "California MK2"

  General California Specification Details
The California is based on a standard 1.8
Details of the extra equipment fitted to make this limited Edition are listed below.

The California despite a very small specification list remains as one of the most popular limited editions.

The Sunburst Yellow exterior had not been used on a UK car before (in fact yellow had not been used at all before in the UK) and was introduced to mark the 5th anniversary of the MX-5.

The colour was only ever used again for the California MK2 limited edition.

Hundreds of would be buyers were disappointed that they would not be one of the lucky few to own this great little car as Mazda kept production numbers to only 300. This ensured exclusivity and kept second hand values very strong.

The Clarion CRX601R radio cassette was installed as standard as was the 15" 5 spoke unique alloy wheels.

The car also featured a special numbered plaque on the centre console denoting the build number (1-300) while the owner had a leather wallet to keep the owners manual in.

The unique limited edition numbered plaque.

A very rare car in a very striking colour, it is becoming increasingly harder to find good examples.

If you are looking for a limited edition "California" in original unmarked condition then you must be prepared to look long and hard, but they are out there as the photos above prove.
