What's in the name ? Over the last 15 years or so that the MX-5 had been in production motoring journalist and the like had herald the MX-5 as a true Icon, therefore is was very fitting that Mazda should call a limited edition the "Icon", Mazda also hoped for the same success as the original limited edition "Icon" in the year 2000.

  General Icon Specification Details
The Icon is based on a Standard 1.6 or 1.8
Details of the extra equipment fitted to make this limited Edition are listed below.

With the success of the original Icon in the year 2000 it was inevitable that Mazda would release another limited edition by the name of Icon.

But this was a little different to the previous one, the original Icon was very luxurious looking with a tan leather interior and very classic looking with a burgundy exterior. The new version however was luxurious but was far from classic, more of a statement of sheer fun with its brightly coloured exterior and aluminium interior trim.

A very different look to the original but since the MX-5 had gone through a face lift in the year of 2001 it had gained a few extra safety features for example the introduction of electronic brake distribution, ironically it was  also considerably cheaper than is predecessor.

The 1.8 engine also gained variable valve timing over the original Icon which gave the engine a little more torque although its worth mentioning fuel consumption dropped from 33.2mpg to 29.8mpg.

The customer had a choice of Sunlight Silver, Titanium Grey, a special Black Mica or the very brightly coloured Chilli Orange. I personally think that the Chilli Orange is a love it or hate it colour, my opinion ? I love it and I think it expresses to people that the owner "has lots of fun and certainly enjoys life to the full" and why not !

15" Enkei 5 spoke alloy wheels added to the sporty appearance, these had also been used on the "Arizona" and "Phoenix"  limited editions.

The front fog lights helped the drivers visibility in bad weather, its worth noting that these lights were not normally fitted to limited edition cars as standard and would normally be about a £350 option.

Other options included a chrome petrol cap and aluminium style bars (as seen in the main photo above) this could be purchased with the free £500 gift voucher that Mazda gave to the lucky owner.

The interior was very up to date with a aluminium centre console and even featured a aluminium radio and CD player. The air vents and instrument dials were also trimmed with aluminium.

The heated leather seats featured orange stitching around the edge as did the gear shift and handbrake lever, while a different style wind blocker with the addition of two extra speakers gave the CD player a better sound.

To sum up, a very high specification car which leaves the owner not having to purchase anything for there new pride and joy as Mazda thankfully has supplied it all in one very nice package.

Whether you choose the subtle colours like the Sunlight Silver, Black Mica, Titanium Grey, or the bright Chilli Orange is a matter of preference, but one thing is for sure you will have lots of fun.
